Basic Information about Bonsai Trees

Basic Information about Bonsai Trees

While the origins of how to create and nurture a bonsai tree come from China the actual name of these potted trees comes from Japan, in fact the word bonsai refers to a small potted tree. The cultivation of such beautiful trees was actually started by wealthy Chinese people who lived during the Han Dynasty which was famous because it lasted for about 400 years in many of the arts flourished during this period. The Art of miniaturizing this beautiful trees was passed on from generation to generation and continued in other countries such as Korea, Japan and Vietnam. The process of miniaturizing these plans is actually very intricate due to the fact that they are not naturally small, in other words the seeds and plants used to create bonsai trees are not genetically dwarf, instead their size is modified through pruning and what they use of wires.Literature which describes the entire principle of a miniature garden was developed by the Japanese monk Kokan Shiren, these principles included what is called bonseki which is the principle of creating miniature landscapes on black lacquer with the use of stones, pebbles and other materials. The stick and yet beautiful shapes of traditional bonsai trees are actually achieved through techniques applied during the process of cultivation, the two most popular techniques used to create beautiful bonsai trees are called jin and shari. The first method which is known as "jin" consists of removing the bark from an entire tree branch in order to create the illusion of a snag of deadwood, the physical appearance of the tree changes as this technique is applied. This technique which is called "shari" involves stripping bark from areas of the trunk which emulates the look of natural scarring which is normally acquired by trees after it loses one of its limbs or its stroke by a lightning. Not every type of seed can be used in order to create a beautiful looking bonsai tree, the best seeds used to create these trees are: Trident maple seed, hedge maple, field maple, Japanese maple, vine maple, red maple, Barberry, strawberry tree, Bougainvillea, Cedar, Hinoki Cypress, Fig, ginkgo, olive tree, etc.The list shown above only includes a few of the many types of seed and trees which are actually perfect for bonsai tree cultivation and the appearance will obviously change from one type of tree to another. Due to the many physical differences between one tree to another those who have adopted the creation of bonsai trees as a pastime have also decided to create entire miniature gardens using different types of bonsai trees.

The need for Air Purification

The need for Air Purification

The need for Air Purification. Activated carbon filters represent one of the most efficient and cost-effective ways to purify air as well as water. Air purification is important in hydroponics as well as good, clean water in maintaining hydroponic systems. You’ll find many different types of systems available at stores and websites that sell hydroponic supplies, but you’ll want a good supply, as activated carbon filters require periodic changing. The Importance of Carbon Air FiltersAlthough “hydroponics” literally means “water gardening,” air purification is an important component. One of the challenges maintaining indoor hydroponic systems and indoor gardens is eliminating the many airborne contaminants that can cause your plants to sicken and even die. It’s a good idea to have a blower of some kind that brings in plenty of fresh air to the space, but carbon filters are necessary in order to remove various potential toxins from the environment as well. There’s another important reason why when engaging in activities related to indoor horticulture, carbon filters are important, and that is to keep odors at a minimum.Types of Carbon Air FiltersThere are several types of carbon filters available:• Powdered activated carbon (PAC)• Granulated activated carbon (GAC)• Extruded activated carbon (EAC)• Impregnated carbon• Polymers coated carbon• Activated carbon fiberEach of these has a specific use, not all of which are appropriate for hydroponic systems and indoor gardens. Indoor air filters are of the GAC type. Used on U.S. Navy submarines, granulated activated carbon filters contain a form of that element of which the granules are relatively larger than that found in powdered activated carbon air filters. How Do Carbon Filters Work?It is not possible to see the process by which activated carbon purifies air and water, nor even under any but the most powerful electron microscope. Carbon is activated by treating charcoal with oxygen, which opens up millions of “micropores” in the surface of the granules on the atomic level. This provides a relatively huge surface in relation to size – up to 2,000 square meters per gram! Because of this surface area, organic chemicals that have a tendency to bond to carbon are virtually unable to pass through and are trapped. By the way, carbon air filters are not effective when it comes to inorganic chemicals (the exception being chlorine, which is why activated carbon is good for water treatment). However, chances are that your plants won’t be producing sodium or any nitrates, and it’s unlikely to enter your indoor garden from the outside.Replace Your Carbon Air Filters as RecommendedThere is a limit to how much in the way of organic contaminants activated carbon filters can absorb; therefore, they need to be changed regularly. You can extend the life of your carbon filters by using them in combination with HEPA filters.

Landscaping Ideas with Stone That May Make Your House Look its Best

Landscaping Ideas with Stone That May Make Your House Look its Best

When you own a house, you want the outside to look just as good as the inside. This is why you notice tons of people on the weekends planting lots of plants and trying their best to create their yards look amazing. but, the only problem is the reason that a lot of the great ideas for landscaping have already been done. Obviously, there is one thing that people tend to forget about whenever it comes to landscaping, and it really is one of the great things to work with, and that is stone. Landscaping stone ideas can, not only provide your yard a feel all of its own, however at the same moment, it is going to give your yard a fresh feel. There are so lots of different things which you can do with stone, it's amazing that more people don’t utilize it. The possibilities are endless, and that stone is a best way to create every yard special. To start with, you need to know that stones, not only provide an ideal walk way, but they create a good patio. Whenever people are using stones around their house, the first thing that they generally do is utilize it for a walk way. Sure it's a great idea, but it's been played out to death. It's time to arise with a fresh idea. Instead of just using it for a pathway, utilize it to build the ground of your patio. They make very flat stones that are perfect to be used as a floor. This will give your patio a very stylish, yet, very outdoor feel. Another plan you may want to consider about using is using the stones to create levels to your floors. What you do is put down stones to build a wall (not a huge wall, but a small one). Then behind the wall you fill it with dirt. Then you set your flowers. Behind those flowers you craft one more wall, but this time you build it a bit larger. Then you fill that with dirt and you repeat as several times as you want. The best idea for stones, however, is to use them when making a pond in your back yard. This is really simple to do, and just about anyone can perform it over the course of just one weekend. Not only that, but the stones around it are going to give it an incredible look. If you attach a little pump to the pond to create the pond have moving water, then it will keep things like mosquitoes away of it. There is no end to the number of things that you can accomplish with stones in your backyard. The grand news is that the majority of it can be done in a day, and stones (for the most part) do no cost that a lot to work with.

Garden Tool Organization 101

Garden Tool Organization 101

No, I am not a gardener. Whew, it just feels good to say that. Here in the Northern Hemisphere it is time to plant gardens and mow the lawns. We wait until after Mother's Day which was on May 11th this year to plant tomatoes and other warm loving veggies. Any earlier than this and they can get frozen. But this year the day after Mother's Day it was almost freezing at 36 F.It takes the guilt away for me to say I am not a gardener. Don't get me wrong, I have done my share. I love the taste of veggies fresh from the garden. When our five girls were at home I would wake them up on Saturday morning before the sun was up (what was I thinking) so they could help weed the garden because I thought that would teach them how to work. Let's be honest here, it would have been easier to just have done it ourselves but we wanted them to have the experience. They all grew up with a fantastic work ethic, but none of them have gardens.Organizing gardening tools can make gardening more enjoyable. Anytime you have to hunt for the tools, or other things it takes some of the fun out of it. Make a place in your garage or shed just for your gardening tools. Some people refer to zones in the garage and one of these zones would be for the gardening gear. Justin Cave, host of HGTV's "Ground Breakers" said, "When it comes to gardening, we seem to be unorganized, myself included. Getting organized makes you feel better and makes you want to garden." Personally I am not so sure it makes me want to garden, but the same concepts that apply to inside my home applies to outside my home. Organization just makes me feel better about my home and about myself.Prioritize your needs and take the time to declutter. Get rid of those tools that have cracked handles or you avoid using because you aren't comfortable with. The saying 'you get what you pay for' is true. The cheap tool may look good at the store but the cheap ones generally are the ones that break the quickest and the easiest. It pays to pay for quality.Susan Appleget Hurst, Better Homes & Gardens senior associate garden editor, recommends three essential tools. A leaf rake, spade and garden fork. She also recommends brightly colored handles that are easy to spot in the yard. Have you noticed how many handles are either green or brown? Maybe we could spray another color on the handle.Hang tools on garage walls to save space and avoid accidentally driving over those that may have been leaned against the wall and have fallen. When hung they are easy to find and it looks organized. Hurst recommends a five-gallon bucket with a liner for tools. (She uses the Bucket Boss). The tools fit around the outside of the bucket and lawn clippings or weeds go in the bucket.Hoses fit nicely on a hose reel. There are many different kinds of holders for the garden hose and when not in use they look better rolled up rather than lying out on the lawn. And they are better protected from the blaring hot sun.If you have a container in the garage with drawers' smaller tools can be stored there. Label the drawer so you will know where to put the tool back after use to help you stay organized. Also keep the tools sharpened and clean. Wipe off dirt or mud with a cloth and at the end of the season wipe the metal tools with linseed oil. Even if you don't like to garden, when your tools are organized it will look like you do. Then you can always find them to loan to your neighborMarilyn Bohn's BioMarilyn is a creative organizer who has been organizing for over 20 years. The Uses Of Sewing Machine

The Uses Of Sewing Machine
Submitted by robertoms2003
Sewing machines were invented long back during the first Industrial Revolution. The intention behind the invention of such machines was to decrease the time required in sewing, as before this all the sewing work was done manually. The cloth companies needed to optimize their work and sewing machines was the answer.Once the first sewing machine was invented, the productivity and the efficiency of the clothing and fabric industries increased vastly. Also, the sewing machines have improved greatly with their speeds increasing manifolds, variations available in stitching styles. The modern sewing machines look and work in a much more mechanized way as compared to the sewing machines which our great grandmothers used. Instead of simple stitching, they embroider, stitch, attach buttons, do pekoe and many more other activities. The older machines used a single thread chain stitch mechanism. The modern sewing machine uses two threads instead of one and uses what is called lock stitching mechanism. The industrial sewing machines are generally specialized for one type of stitching since they need to be optimized. They are designed in a way that the fabric is able to glide in and out easily, without any hassle of thimbles and needles. The ease reduces the effort required and saves a lot of time. The problem with the chain stitch was - it was extremely weak and it was possible to pull it apart very easily. With the introduction of machines in the field, people started to think that a better and stronger way of stitching could now be devised which would only be possible through machine usage. Lock stitch was the answer to their questions. In the case of lock stitch, two different threads are interlocked from both the sides of the fabric. It results in a stitch which can be looked as if the fabric is stitched from both ends making it much more strong and durable than the conventional chain stitch. Thomas Saint was the first person to have a design for sewing machine patented. His machine was designed to work on canvas and leather. A working model of the same was never built. Other designs and patents came along in the future. Walter Hunt was the developer of lock stitch technique. Other than the basic requirements in the motion of loopers, needles and bobbins, the most important movement is that of the fabric. It is necessary that the fabric moves at the required time (generally continuously) so that the stitches are made at the right position. The motion is also called as `feed`. Typical feed motion include: needle feed, drop feed, puller, walking foot, and manual. Generally, more than one kind of feed is used in a single machine to optimize the working. A household machine will generally include only the lock stitch mechanism. But the machine can be used in a little different way (generally by moving the needle in different ways which is an included function in the machine); fancy stitches can be made possible. The simplest form of a fancy stitch is zigzag in which the needle just needs to perform an oscillatory motion continuously as the stitching is done normally. Mechanical configuration can differ vastly in sewing machines. Some of the typical configurations are - cylinder bed, flat bed, off the arm and post bed. All the basic feed mechanism and stitch types are available in all these configurations. However, for industrial purposes the best possible configuration is used for a type of stitch. Like, blind stitch always uses cylinder bed configuration. The invention of sewing machine was a necessity. And its introduction greatly increased the production and quality of the cloth industry.
